Chithra

Chithra was established in the year 1951, by Sri A.S Murthy and Sri. S Ramanathan. Chithra was the banner that performed the first Street play in Karnataka –‘Kattu’. Chithra went on perform numerous stage plays and street plays. Some of its notable productions include King Lear (Dir- B Suresh, in collaboration with Abhinaya Taranga), Caucasian Chalk Circle ( Dir- Janardhan (Jenni)), Aa Gandhi Ee Gandhi ( Dir- Gowri Dattu), Balidaana ( Dir- P. N Suresh; in collaboration with Abhinaya Taranga) and Surya kanthi an experimental visual poetry presentation about the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh- Dir- A.M Prakash).

Chithra has performed thousands of streetplays till date. Some of them include Echchara Echchara ( on AIDS), Hanchika Prakarana      (on Keroscene distribution), Belagu ( on Dowry), Keelarime Yeke (Girl child empowerment)and Hasire Usiru ( on the environment). The street paly ‘Siddha’, on the urban rural divide won the Best Street play –South Zone Award. Now, primarily the streetplay performing division, Chithra also performs stage plays, puppet shows, mime shows on commission.
